As her son grew older he found there were other ways to hurt girls than his fists. Servants could be dismissed but that girl, that wretched girl—the child was put on Earth to be a rod to her back. She should have let her die at that dreary school. The spiteful child would turn out to have an uncle in Madeira, always writing, writing. The besotted old fool with his fancy gifts, his London lawyer, his threatened visits... besotted but rich. And John was so expensive.
It would have to be marriage. T'was the only way to escape ruin.
